~ What is Malawi Orphan Care Ministries? ~
In December 2005 a group of volunteers at First English Lutheran Church, Mansfield, Ohio started Malawi Orphan Care Ministries to both financially and prayerfully support the Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Ministries in Malawi, Africa.
~ What is the Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Ministries? ~
Kanyenyeva is an area northeast of Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city and in February 2005, the elders of four local villages started an orphan project to help feed and support 125 local orphans and their caregivers. These children are orphans due to losing one or both parents, usually to AIDS or malaria. By November 2005, the Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Ministries had to stop their orphan feeding program due to lack of funds and requested our help. In December 2005, with our donations and prayers, they were able to restart their feeding program, purchase seeds, fertilizer, plates and utensils. They were also able to get a crop planted in time for the rainy season which begins in December.

“It is amazing how God works and how that He takes care of His children. It is very comforting to have people like you who are committed to sharing God’s word. Not only in word but also in deeds.” - Shadreck Chikoti, volunteer coordinator of the Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Project.

“Despite a good harvest this year, a 2006 Global
Hunger Index report has ranked the country among those with alarming food
shortages in the world.” “The report also said in sub-Saharan Africa, including Malawi, income inequities and the high HIV/AIDS prevalence are also some of the reasons countries in the region cannot achieve food security.” - www.nationmalawi.com, Malawi Hunger Situation, 10/20/06.
~ When Should I Help Malawi Orphan Care Ministries? ~
We need your help NOW. This is a critical ongoing need and the money we have currently raised (approximately $2,000 every three months) helps to feed 240 orphans. It also provides seeds and fertilizer for the orphan project and for the caregivers of the orphans so they can become more self-sufficient. This is an ongoing need and we continue to need your help to feed the orphans!
We recently had a special, separate fund raiser to help The Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Ministries to purchase a minibus. Their plan was to use this minibus to generate much needed income by providing transportation to paying passengers. In Malawi, most people rely on walking, bicycles or purchasing a ride on a minibus for transportation. It is estimated that they could make up to $250 profit per week with a minibus. A used minibus would cost approximately $10,000.
Thanks to the generous donations of many people, in January 2008, $10,687 was sent to the Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Ministries to purchase a used minibus!! Thanks to your generosity, this money will be used to purchase the used minibus AND pay the fees for licenses. Click here to read a thank you letter from Kanyenyeva Orphan Care Ministries.
