Pastor Jerry Schmalenberger
The Reverend Jerry L. Schmalenberger served as senior pastor at First English Lutheran Church from 1970 to 1979. Reverend Schmalenberger came to FELC in June of 1970 from First Lutheran Church in Tiffin, Ohio after previously serving at churches in Springfield and Bellefontaine.
He is a graduate of Wittenberg University and Hamma Seminary, and taught speech at Wittenberg after his graduation. He also was program director and general director of Camp Mowana from 1952 to 1959. In 1964, Reverend Schmalenberger was recognized as "Young Man of the Year in Ohio" and in 1970 he was recognized by the Ohio Senate as an exemplary citizen.
In 1979, Reverend Schmalenberger accepted a call to St. Johns Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. During his years at FELC, Reverend Schmalenberger was the driving force behind a number of changes and updates to the worship style and space, most of which are still in place to this day.
Dr. Schmalenberger served as President and Professor of Parish Ministry of Pacific Lutheran Seminary until his retirement in 1996. Since that time he has lectured in Suriname, Jamaica, Argentina, Uruguay, Liberia, Germany, Mainland China, Sumatra and Hong Kong. He now serves as an ELCA Global Mission Volunteer teaching in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Sumatra, Indonesia. An accomplished author, Dr. Schmalenberger is currently writing his 22nd book!
